Music: Ashtray Electric and The Dirty Skirts

A bit of a "Indie Brit Rock" night, last night at the Armchair Theatre. Despite the bad weather outside (the usual cold and wet winter's day in the Mother City), the Armchair Theatre was packed! The Dirty Skirts commented that it was the first time they had to turn people away - maybe - but there still too many people - unsafe even. In fact, if something bad did happen, there would have been quite a few casualties. And it is not only that you couldn't move - it was compounded by not enough ventilation (the fans weren't turned on) and poor bar service - too many people, not enough bar tenders.

The Ashtray Electric (no website), are a new band, and while well dressed, did not really have much to offer. They play music well enough - but the lead singer was hardly audible, and they just didn't have any stage presence. Maybe it's the newbie blues, but the fact is, they weren't impressive enough such that I would want to pay to see them again.

Sara did not rate The Dirty Skirts as musical geniuses - they probably aren't - but regardless, they are great entertainment! A very energetic stage act, coupled with a number of easy crowd sing-alongs, and generally brilliant performance. Maybe they aren't musical geniuses, but very few acts are. They do make a great night out though!

Hi, This Gil from The Armchair.

Yeah, I agree, things were a bit out of hand on Friday and we had a lot of thinking to do afterwards.

By way of explanation , we are experiencing something very new at The Armchair where we are having to turn people away because the club is to full. Up till now this is a situation we could only hope for, or something that happened once or twice a year. But the music scene seems continues to grow and suddenly the likes of Lark, Goldfish, The Dirty Skirts and Unit.r are starting to draw real numbers and are packing the place on a regular basis.

This growth is a great thing but it does mean that we have to reassess how we manage the club on the big nights and for big acts. For the last couple days we have sat down and though about what to do and what limits to set for attendance at the club. I think we have come up with a good plan to keep the club both safe and enjoyable.

Thanks for your comments. As good as it is to get the compliments, it's also important for us to know what needs to be fixed.

I have to give you this: you have chosen your blog name very well indeed as you are very much so, an idiot.

Did you know that Ahtray Electric (without the "The") played their first gig that night?

I was there.
It was fucking awesome and when I looked around me, everyone were having a good time and jamming to their music, which is always a good sign, right?!

Have you been to one of their gigs after that? well, do yourself a favour and go! They are tight. They have a fresh sound, unlike all the indie stuff i've heard in Cape Town! Go check them out again! They will make you feel very happy inside, i promise!!!!
